The Counselling Process
Step #1 - Reach out for a consultation
During this call you can tell me a bit about what brought you to counselling, what you’re hoping to change, or what feelings are not manageable. We will talk through the modalities I work with so you can get a sense of what I offer. Consultations are commitment free, and purely to give you a sense of who I am.
Working with a counsellor involves a lot of trust, and it is important to make sure that there is a good therapeutic relationship. If you want to begin with sessions, we would then move to scheduling the initial session.
Step #2 - Sessions
During the initial session, I am working to learn about you and provide whatever support is most needed. Once I have a sense of the things that are going on for you, and what you want to work towards, I outline my recommendations for treatment modality (or modalities) and a treatment plan (e.g., CBT for 8-10 sessions).
Transparency regarding my clinical insight and treatment plan is very important to me. This allows us to collaborate effectively towards your goals.
Initially, sessions are often closer together (once a week or once every other week), but as work continues, time between sessions will lengthen.
After each session I will send you a summary of the highlights of the session, along with information on new skills offered in the session, and new coping mechanisms offered.
Step #3 - Maintenance Sessions (if any!)
My job is to help you find agency within yourself to move forward. To help you move past regular sessions and towards “maintenance sessions”. This means that we stay connected if you want a session, but largely crises have passed and you are able to manage effectively. Maintenance sessions may occur every few months, to yearly, or you may decide to discontinue totally. The point of sessions is to find the support, learn new skills, so that you can manage more effectively.
